Doctor Europaeus

Starting from 1992, the European University Association, in order to support the possibility to use the several national titles at a European level, has elaborated a guarantee stamp titled Doctor Europaeus, which may be acquired in all European countries together with the national title.

The Doctor Europaeus certificate is an additional label to the PhD title which is issued at the national level.
It is not an academic title with supranational value, nor is it issued by international institutions. Such certificate must comply with the European University Association’s (EUA) conditions.

How to obtain the “Doctor Europaeus” title

The Doctor Europaeus title is issued by the University, upon the request of the PhD student and the favorable opinion of the Doctoral Program Committee, if the following conditions are met:

  • the PhD Student has carried out a period of at least three months in one or more Countries which have subscribed to the Bologna Process
  • the PhD Student has two positive reports on the thesis, written by two professors from Universities which are based in Countries, Italy excluded, that have subscribed to the Bologna Process. The PhD Student will have to submit the thesis and the abovementioned reports to the relevant Office by the prearranged deadline
  • the final exam Committee includes at least one professor from a University based in a Country that has subscribed to the Bologna Process, but which is different from that in which the thesis is going to be defended
  • the thesis defense is carried out partly in Italian and partly in another European language.

The “Doctor Europaeus” title request must be sent to scuola.dottorato@uninsubria.it.

The Doctoral Program Committee must decide upon:

  • whether the PhD Student has successfully completed their final year and whether they are admitted to the final exam;
  • the final exam Committee appointment, which should include at least one professor from a University based in a Country that has subscribed to the Bologna Process, but which is different from that in which the thesis is going to be defended
